Independent community radios serve as powerful tools that amplify local voices, foster cultural diversity, and promote education within communities. Indeed, these community radios are generally funded and run by residents and listeners.
The latter are usually trained by the residents to use radio equipment and to learn the basics of radio programming and running, training citizens and sometimes future journalists. They also do significant work around music and art, as well as news curation, actively offering alternative sources of information.
Community radios hold within themselves the roots of solidarity movements, through their collaborative mindset and collective philosophy, from mutual support to international supporting campaigns for Ukraine or Gaza, proving themselves as important players in terms of cultural alliances.
This talk explores and celebrates community radios as hybrid structures of creation, creativity, information, and distribution. It will also spotlight the reality of still often operating in the shadows, lacking acknowledgement and support.
